Celiac Sprue


Approximately one out of every 1,000 people suffers from celiac sprue disease, which affects the small bowel. Celiac sprue occurs when people who inadequately absorb iron, fat, calcium and Vitamin D have a reaction to the gluten protein found in barley, wheat and rye. While symptoms vary in severity, common signs for this disease include fatigue, abdominal bloating and cramps, diarrhea, thin, brittle bones and skin rashes.

Treatment varies among patients, but generally involves a life-long gluten-free diet along with additional supplements and treatments specific for the individual’s case. Periodic check-ups will be necessary for life to monitor for possible complications like ulcers, lymphoma and cancer.
