A person is classified as having constipation if they have a bowel movement less than two times a week and their stools are dry and hard.

Usually, constipation is only temporary, needing only simple lifestyle changes in diet and exercise to remedy the problem. Over-the-counter laxatives may also be used to treat constipation.

While the exact cause of most forms of constipation is unknown, few types of constipation have long-term consequences. Increasing your intake of fiber, drinking plenty of water, exercising regularly and immediately responding to the urge to have a bowel movement can help reverse constipation and prevent the onset of constipation.

However, chronic constipation can be more severe, affecting a person’s quality of life, and may be associated with another disease. If the above lifestyle changes do not help alleviate the symptoms of constipation and you experience one or more of the following symptoms, please contact your doctor.

  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Bloody stool
  • Rectal pain
  • Thin stools
  • Constipation alternating with diarrhea
  • Inexplicable weight loss
