What is TIF Procedure?
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) is a
treatment to help reduce chronic heartburn and gasteroesophageal reflux disease
(GERD). This incisionless procedure is designed to rebuild an anti-reflux valve
that helps protect the body against acid reflux.
How is the TIF Procedure performed?
During the procedure, you will undergo general
anesthesia and the procedure usually takes less than an hour to perform. A
physician will then place a specially designed endoscope through the mouth and
down to the stomach. The camera on the scope is then positioned to view the
connection between the esophagus and the stomach. Next, the physician pulls
down tissue from the gastroesophageal value (GEV), wraps the tissue around and
fastens several folds of the tissue to create a new valve.
How long is recovery? Are there any risks?
The TIF Procedure is very safe. To date, the TIF
procedure has been performed on more than 20,000 cases worldwide. By accessing
the stomach through the mouth causing no incisions, complications are minimized
that lead to a quicker recovery. Most patients can usually go home the same day
and return work within a few days after the procedure
